The cold, damp air, the smell of earth all over you reminded me very of of Autumn and Winter terms at school when the dash to be in before 8:45 was a part of our lives or as I got older walking across the sports field got to you.
It wasn't that I felt the cold- I still don't feel it - nor that I wasn't well clad with my dark green dufflecoat on with various "Mod" and Beatles badges pinned to the lapels whatever school rules had to say about that, it's that boys would be sent out in all weathers back then to play football for double Sport.
That included wobbly legged me.
As with most team sports we had to have full kit on and that included football boots which in that era were always lace up unlike a few today so I needed a kit boy to help me dressing and keeping that relationship mattered.
Generally they had thick plastic studs to help you in theory at least get across wet, muddy playing fields and towards the opponents goal although it took litttle for me to be down covered in mud.
Then there were the thick soaks and shin pads as the other side always tried kicking you anywhere and all this muddy kit had to go in your bag and then fully washed for next week.
